There are several different types of migraines people suffer from, including both the classic and common migraine. Of these different types of migraines there is an especially rare type known as the hemiplegic migraine.

This type of migraine has very specific symptoms which include:

  • A sudden attack which occurs on one side of the body which may or may not include paralysis. It typically happens during the aura period of the migraine attack.
  • The weakness experienced often involves the face, arm and leg of the person suffering the migraine.
  • If the right side of the body is affected the speech of the person suffering the migraine may become slurred or impaired.
  • It can often be triggered by a mild head trauma.
  • The paralysis is followed by the migraine headache.
  • It may also include symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, double vision, partial vision as well as difficulty with balance.
Hemiplegic migraines are mainly genetic and there will normally be at least one direct family member who also suffers from them. Given that many of these migraines are a result of minor trauma to the head people likely to suffer from this type of migraine should be advised against engaging in contact sports. In families where this condition is common onset often happens in childhood. The no contact sports rule is therefore especially important for children in these families.

Research has discovered several specific genetic markers for the hemiplegic migraine. Screening is not a prerequisite for identifying the problem but is available on request. Of all the types of migraines this one is particularly frightening as its symptoms very closely mirror a stroke. The other problem is these migraines do not respond well to most normal migraine medications. They often have to be treated as if the sufferer has epilepsy which necessitates more dangerous medications than normal.

Symptoms that let people who suffer from migraines know the migraine is coming are called prodromal symptoms. Not all migraineurs are fortunate to experience these but for those that do the warning they get is sufficient for them to plan how they are going to handle the down time they are about to enter. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help a migraineur use those same prodromal symptoms to short circuit the migraine attack.

The aim of cognitive behavioral therapy is for migraineurs to recognise and consciously manipulate their behaviors that play a part in the development of their headache. The patient and therapist together determine how the migraineur behaves when they feel a headache coming on or, for those who do not experience prodromal symptoms, when the pain starts. Together they then attempt to develop alternative behaviors to use in the same situation that will change the migraine.

The therapist and migraineur work together in cognitive behavioral therapy to:

  • Identifying the problem behavior that needs modification. Often this is achieved by keeping a headache diary.
  • Establishing a treatment goal. Aiming for total annihilation of the migraine is probably not very practical in the beginning. Instead steps along the way should be established like learning to relax around possible migraine triggers.
  • Create new patterns of behavior in an effort to effect changes.
  • Monitoring the patients reaction to their new behavior as well as checking for external factors that may be influencing or affecting that behavior.

Some of the more common therapy techniques are listed below:

  • Desensitization
  • Positive Thinking
  • Reframing
  • Role-Playing
  • Self-Talk

Although cognitive behavioral therapy is helpful in its own right, it is particularly useful for patients who are also on preventative drug therapies. A study done in 1989 found the success rate of clinic-based and minimal-therapist contact behavioral therapy had approximately the same success rate. This makes it an affordable alternative remedy for migraineurs.

A natural method of relieving migraines that is non-invasive and without the use of medication is the use of chiropractic care. This method is of particular benefit for patients who for some reason or another are not able to take prescribed medication.

Despite the advances in medical science over the last hundred years migraine headaches remain idiopathic, their cause remains unknown. There are several theories that attempt to explain migraines and their causes but the net result is no definitive cause has yet been found. Serotonin deficiency, genetic malformation and arterial swelling in the brain are some of them.

On the other hand a fairly common chiropractic theory is subluxations at the base of the head and neck are responsible in some way for the production of migraines. Subluxations are tense or knotted areas in the muscles attached to the small bones of the upper spinal column. When x-rayed doctors often miss the tension of the muscles as the bones appear to be in their correct places. A chiropractor can relax these subluxations by gently manipulating the spine.

There are two varieties of chiropractic care for those who suffer from migraines. Straight and mixed chiropractic. Straight chiropractic is only about manipulating the spine to relieve the subluxations. Mixed chiropractic on the other hand uses traditional manipulation with other complimentary techniques. Reducing neck strain and tension is the goal of mixed chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care has been compared with the use of medications in treatments of migraines and chronic tension-type headaches. Researchers at the Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota gave 218 headache patients either drug therapy or regular chiropractic care. 40 to 50% reduction in headache pain was reported by both groups but four weeks after all care was discontinued the group that received chiropractic care were the only ones still enjoying the reduction in pain the treatment originally initiated. Only a quarter of the drug therapy group were found to be still benefiting from their treatment at the follow up.

I just dropped my daughter off for swim practice at 6:45am! She is starting high school and has never done competitive swimming before, but she signed up for the swim team in order to meet some people and get some great physical activity.
Honestly, I am incredibly proud of her for doing this. She is way outside her comfort zone and is learning lots of new things every day. She's not going to win her first meet, but she is getting SO MUCH out of this experience already.
I see a lot of similarities here when it comes to creating content for your business.
Jump In
She told me that the pool is pretty cold when you first jump in. Especially at 7:00 in the morning!
I used to be the type of person who could stand at the edge of the pool (or on the first step) for a LONG time. Maybe never even getting in.
We host a lot of pool parties - in fact we have one coming up this weekend - and it's interesting to watch different people handle it. Some will just strip down to their suit and dive right in. Others will stick their toe in the water first, or dangle their feet in. A lot of women will slide in gracefully, careful not to get their hair wet. Of course, there are always the people who hang out by the food table, drink in hand. They didn't even bring their suit and have no intension of going in the water.
I think this is a perfect metaphor for many things in our lives. The things we want to do but find ourselves hesitating to step in.
When it comes to creating content, the hardest part is jumping in. The beginning can be new, scary and uncomfortable. A lot of people stand on the edge for a LONG time, like I used to do at the pool. They can see what they want to create, they imagine the platform they want to have, but they haven't created a single piece of content.
It's easy to stand on the edge for a long time and look into the water. You want to go swimming. But the hardest part is getting in the water!
I've learned, both with content creation and with swimming, to just count to 3 and lean in. There is a point where you can't go back. Your weight is far enough over the water that you're going to end up wet. Whether it's graceful or not, well, that's another matter. But you can't undo it.
How can you create a point of no return when it comes to your content? Hit record. Have others watch and count down with you. (By the pool, I always have my kids count down.) Have some support to count with you and cheer you on, even if you belly flop into the water initially!
Keep Moving
The girls on the swim team have each other to motivate them. You certainly don't want to be the only one outside the water when everyone else jumps in!
They often start out with goose bumps trying to hide their chattering while they listen to the coach. But once they get going, and do their 150 meter warm-up, the water actually feels really nice!
That's the second part of the content creation journey. Even if your first video or article isn't perfect, it's important to keep going! The more you do it, the better you'll get. Your results will improve. Your platform will grow.

Productivity. Priorities. Planning.
There are a lot of buzz words right now (and they all seem to start with the letter P!) that are intended to help us make the most of our time and efforts.
But in all the buzz about how to get more done, there is surprisingly little talk about what, exactly, we should be doing. Are all "to do" items created equal? Checking things off a list doesn't guarantee that we are moving ourselves forward.
Growth Activities
Some things on our list need to get done, and you could argue that they are "important." Many people fill their days doing client projects and customer service. After all, we have to deliver on our promises. But those are not growth activities.
Of course, we also fill a surprising amount of our time with "distractions." Some are more obvious than others. Many of us lose hours in reading and responding to e-mails, which might feel like "work" but how productive are we really being?
How many of your activities are true "growth activities." What things will grow your business? Expand your impact? Allow you to make a bigger difference? Really fulfill your purpose?
When you really look at it, those things happen primarily in two ways. When you create things. And when you connect with people.
As a Content Creation Coach, these types of activities are dear to my heart. I see the power of creating new things. Of putting your ideas into tangible pieces. Whether you are writing a blog article or a book, creating a program, shooting a video, making a new presentation... creating things generates value.
You are increasing the assets of your business. You are putting valuable things into the marketplace (even if they don't cost money). You are giving value that expands your worth and inevitably returns to you.
I often ask people, "What are you creating next to grow your business?"
The most powerful thing about creating content and other pieces in your business is that it gives you something new to share. Creating something new doesn't mean anything if others don't see it.
Which leads me to the second type of growth activity...
When you connect with other people, that is when all sorts of magical things happen. You might end up with a new client. You could find out about a fantastic opportunity. You could impact that person and create a ripple effect in their life and beyond.
The incredible web of possibilities that exists in a conversation with another person is huge. There is a real art to finding the places where your interests, needs, and capabilities intersect. That's why it's called "networking"!
Being able to impact someone else is at the core of our purpose. Each of us brings our own area of expertise and focus to each interaction, of course. But if we approach it openly, each conversation is an opportunity to live out our purpose.
That's real growth.
And business growth follows real growth.
I've been spending a lot of my time recently connecting with others. And I often share things that I have created with the people I am connecting with. Sharing value and making a difference. Win win!

The media frequently headlines stories of high-profile individuals who have been involved in sexual indiscretions. This is not a new phenomenon but has occurred for centuries. These situations are not limited merely to the rich and famous but actually occur with people from all walks of life.
Many things remain the same over time. What has changed over the years, however, is the role that technology plays in our lives. Every possible detail of inappropriate sexual liaisons are broadcast- sometimes even before a confession or charges are laid. We hear more than we want or need to hear faster than we can even imagine on our televisions, radios, smart phones or through a myriad of other technical devices that we own.
Besides telling us about what others are doing, the internet also provides a variety of ways that we can get into trouble sexually. Those who go on-line with sexual addiction problems find that they are accelerated. Chat rooms, dating sites and prostitution services are readily available and pornography can not only be observed but also can lead to off-line encounters. Occasional use can move to regular use and then to full-fledged addiction all in a matter of weeks!
Sometimes what starts out as a seemingly positive thing can led to negative consequences. A person who is lonely or hurting, for example, might turn to the internet to find peace or to escape from problems and lack of intimacy in their personal lives. They experience temporary relief but, over time their need for fantasy, ritualization and sex increase. Time, money and effort are required to meet these increasing needs and, as a result other responsibilities are neglected.
Sexual addiction involves compulsive behaviours that don't bring long-term satisfaction. Shame, self-loathing, broken relationships, suicidal thoughts and secrecy can fill a life that quickly becomes unmanageable. Unfortunately, denial often prevents the person from getting help.
It isn't just the addict who suffers. Family members also face significant loses, isolation and sadness. Sometimes they even enable the addict by hiding the truth from themselves and the world.
Sexual addiction is an embarrassing situation that people are usually embarrassed and reluctant to talk about. Despite serious efforts to stop the behaviours, the cycle continues and unanswered questions remain unanswered. It's not your fault unless you don't do anything about it.

I was watching a television documentary recently that highlighted computer addiction as one of the biggest problems that China is facing today. In 2008 China declared internet addition to be a clinical disorder, saying it is a top health threat to its teenagers. Several countries, including the United States, have now followed China's lead regarding the problems associated with what has been dubbed "electronic heroine".
Families who were interviewed for the documentary explained that their teen would spend hours and hours online while neglecting basics of life such a bathing. They avoided doing their schoolwork, interacting with family and were argumentative to the point that the parents didn't know what to do.
An inpatient center was established in a suburb of Beijing where these teens, who are compulsive about computers, are rehabilitated with therapy and a mix of military drills. Sometimes the parents have had to drug their child or lie to get them to the boot-camp-like facility. During their treatment program, which can last for three to four months, the teens are behind bars and guarded by soldiers. Their physical activity, sleep and diet are monitoring as staff attempts to help them return to reality. The parents are also encouraged to attend therapy and education sessions.
Tao Ran, who is an Addiction Specialist and Director of the Daxin Center stated that before admission, these "web junkies" became so afraid that a restroom break would affect their performance they would resort to wearing diapers. He also reported that the Beijing center has done a study which shows that individuals who spend more than six hours a day for something other than work or study are most likely to become addicted to the internet. He said "They know the internet inside out but no nothing about human beings".
Every week I hear comments that concern me including these:
1. "But my child needs the computer to do school work" - No school is giving hours and hours of homework every day. As a parent you need to monitor what they are doing on the computer and set limits.
2. "They are so smart and I don't understand computers" - You don't have to be a computer expert to pay attention to what is going on. And if you really care, you will begin learning about this high-risk activity that seems so innocent.
3. "This is the way that my child communicates with their friends". Spending time with friends beats text messaging hands down. And communication doesn't need to be occurring after bedtime!
4. "They like computers". Of course they do. The internet allows people to escape into a fantasy world where they can pretend to be whoever they want without having any responsibility. Teens who are lonely believe that there is another lonely teen on the other side with whom they can connect so they lose themselves in the internet.
5. "They don't listen to me" - Why would they? Listen to your criticizing, accusing and blaming isn't nearly as much fun as achieving a high score on a game! The sad part is that internet gaming sets individuals up for other addictions because going from one level to the next develops and encourages tolerance.
As parents and grandparents we need to take responsibility and that isn't easy in a society that encourages pleasing children. My granddaughter knows that during our time together her computer disappears or I take her home.
It is much easier to prevent a problem than to treat one.
Many parents give their children unlimited access to computers and then become the "bad guys" by trying to take them away as punishment. Consider doing the opposite. Help your child to build healthy lives with balance first. Then teach them to use computers for a specific purpose in a limited time frame. It's like the difference between buying your child an ice cream treat once in a while compared to giving them an ice cream store without any guidelines or responsibilities

If you are really concerned about getting in shape, one of the best ways to be successful is to take the weight loss process one week at a time. Often when people attempt to lose weight they get overwhelmed with everything they are told to do either from friends, infomercials, the Internet, television, something they hear on the news, or possibly read in the paper.
Sure some, or maybe most, of what they're saying will help in your weight loss efforts, but with all that advice it's easy to feel swamped. Therefore with each 7 day block of time, focus on developing one healthy habit that will help you achieve your goal.
For instance, during your first week you just work on eliminating all sugary drinks such as sodas, juices, energy drinks, etc. Instead of taking in all those wasted calories (a 12oz. soda is around 150 calories) trade those beverages in for water which has absolutely zero calories - literally the perfect drink.
If you get rid of 2 sodas a day and drink water instead, that will be 2,100 less calories per week you'll eliminate from your usual diet.
At the end of your first week, possibly on a Sunday evening, review how everything went. Was it tough to make the change stick? Did you accomplish your goal? If not, what prevented you from being successful?
Truthfully answering these questions will provide you with specific problem areas you should focus on to improve the following week.
As your second week begins, continue with your healthy water habit and now add another goal for this 7 day block of time. A good one to tackle next would be to eliminate fast food, restaurant outings, and pizza delivery. In other words, it's time to cook all meals and prepare all snacks at home.
Remember when you're working on the weight loss process that means you will have to make some definitive changes in how you live your life. This can be very difficult. You will likely make some mistakes. You may give in to urges and momentarily revert back to your old eating and drinking habits.
Don't worry, it happens to everyone so try not to be too hard on yourself or get depressed and quit the whole weight loss process. The lesson to be learned is that if you're able to keep the unhealthy situations from arising less and less, you will find your habits slowly becoming more positive.
The longer you stick with the weight loss process, the temptations to eat or drink in an unhealthy manner will vanish. Pretty soon you won't have the urge to drink soda or eat potato chips because you know how bad that is for your body. You won't get fast food to eat because you know how many calories are jam-packed into those unhealthy meals.
Losing weight is a cumulative process that only happens when you stick with healthy habits for a certain amount of time. Healthy nutrition in appropriate portion sizes, along with a consistent exercise routine will get you to lose 1-2 pounds per week. That may not seem like a lot to you but doing the math reveals a whopping 24-48 pounds of potential weight loss in only 6 months!
Imagine if you stick with this weight loss process for an entire year. Your whole world and outlook on life can completely change. The choice is in your hands, hopefully you choose to do what's right and healthy for you.
